What equipment is essential for a marathon?
Running a marathon is a magical moment in a runner's life. Whether it's your first, second, or tenth marathon, it remains both a great adventure and a true sporting challenge.
You should give yourself every chance to make it an unforgettable experience. This naturally involves progressive and regular training over several months, solid mental preparation for race day, careful hydration and nutrition… but also choosing perfectly suited equipment.
Here are some key tips for preparing the essential equipment for running a marathon - starting from the bottom up and including accessories.
Shoes and socks
Choosing the right shoes for long-distance running is one of the most crucial elements. Key criteria to consider include the level of cushioning (adapted to your gait and weight), the drop, the weight, and the overall feel and comfort over long distances. It's essential to test your shoes from the very beginning of your training, and especially during long runs. The goal: to ensure that they remain comfortable from the first to the last kilometer on race day.
Socks are an essential complement to shoes. They should be lightweight, breathable, and technically advanced (with reinforced areas to prevent chafing). Compression socks that cover the calves are an additional option. They can improve venous return and provide a noticeable feeling of support, especially in the second half of the marathon when fatigue sets in.
Shorts and T-shirt
Shorts (or cycling shorts) and a t-shirt (or tank top) are essential for optimal comfort during a run. They should be lightweight, breathable, and designed to prevent chafing. A few additional details to keep in mind for greater comfort include: soft-to-the-touch, "second-skin" fabrics; no tags; odor control; and UV protection for the t-shirt in case of intense sun exposure. For chafing-free comfort, a slightly compressive base layer is ideal. 3D knitting technology eliminates side seams and ensures gentle compression from the first kilometer to the last.
When it comes to shorts or cycling shorts, the presence of multiple pockets is a real advantage. It allows you to carry energy bars or gels and access them easily at any time during the race.
Examples:
First technical layer (made in France)
Ultra-lightweight T-shirt (made in Europe)
Cycling shorts with 6 pockets (made in Europe)
3-in-1 shorts with 5 pockets (made in Europe)
Cap and glasses
A hat and sports sunglasses are recommended on very sunny days, especially on exposed or reflective routes (light-colored roads, seaside). If the temperature exceeds 20°C and the route is mostly in direct sunlight, their use is strongly advised. As with any equipment, it is essential to test them beforehand, during long outings in similar conditions under bright sunlight.
Accessories
Running a marathon requires fluidity of movement and lightness. It is therefore best to avoid bulky accessories such as a hydration pack or an overly heavy running belt, which can cause chafing or progressive discomfort as the kilometers go by.
A small, flexible flask held in the hand can be useful. It allows you to hydrate between aid stations, especially in the last third of the race, which is often the most demanding.
Having the right gear for the 42.195 kilometers of a marathon is key to success. No marathon is easy, even for experienced runners. With comfortable and reliable equipment, you can focus on what matters most: your pace, your breathing, and the joy of running.
