How to prevent chafing between the thighs when running?
When running, whether on road or trail, repeated rubbing between the thighs can cause irritation, or even a burning sensation over time, which can be very painful—for example, when in contact with water in the shower. If you've ever experienced this small torture, even the memory of it is painful. So how can you avoid this chafing between the thighs to run without discomfort and ensure that each outing remains a pleasure and not a source of pain?
Choosing the Right Running Apparel
The first tip to avoid chafing between the thighs is, of course, to choose appropriate clothing. Ideally, it should have several characteristics. The first is to be the right length, covering between two-thirds and three-quarters of the thighs, where they are most developed and thus prone to potential chafing. The second is to be slightly compressive to stay in place and not ride up during the run. You need to find the right balance so that the garment is compressive enough to stay in place without being too tight. The third is to efficiently wick away sweat. A water-laden garment is likely to increase the risk of chafing. The fourth characteristic is to have sufficient elasticity. Muscles swell when heavily solicited. A garment containing elastane will offer the necessary comfort to adapt flexibly during the run.
EDELI running and trail running shorts were designed to meet this 'anti-chafing' specification and combine the four characteristics described above.
Using Anti-Chafing Creams
The second solution is to apply an anti-chafing cream to the inner thighs before each run. This solution is compatible with choosing appropriate clothing. It is recommended in the most severe cases of irritation. It allows for a dual anti-chafing strategy. For very long outings, marathons, long trails, or ultras, do not hesitate to bring a tube of anti-chafing cream and apply a new layer after several hours of running, at a refreshment stop for example. If conditions are particularly hot and/or humid, which will lead to accelerated sweating, some runners even go so far as to double the protection by applying an anti-chafing cream and an antiperspirant powder. The former reduces irritation related to friction, while the latter absorbs sweat (up to a certain point).
Applying Post-Run Treatment
If you have irritation after running, it is advisable to shower or rinse with rather cold water (hot water increases irritation), gently pat the thighs dry, and then let the skin breathe. You can also apply a reparative cream to the inner thighs.
In summary, the solution to avoid chafing between the thighs when running is primarily choosing clothing adapted to your body shape and designed to prevent chafing, and potentially supplementing this with an anti-chafing cream for double protection. This ensures that every kilometer of your run remains a pleasure.
