Les accessoires indispensables pour courir l’été

Essential accessories for running in summer

In summer, runners must protect themselves from the heat and the sun, whose rays are particularly intense at this time of year, and pay even more attention to hydration. So what accessories should you have with you for a summer running outing on vacation or close to home? Here is a list of essential equipment and accessories for running in the middle of summer.

Hydration

There's no salvation without adequate hydration in the middle of summer during every running or trail running outing, even a very early morning outing. Hydration is a major component of any running training all year round, but it's even more essential and unavoidable in summer. The body will heat up even more quickly at this time of year when we go running. We'll need to replace the fluid lost through perspiration, which will of course be more abundant in summer, as perspiration is the body's natural cooling mechanism. To do this, it's essential to bring water or a drink with electrolytes during your outing. It's up to you to choose the option that suits you best for bringing your water or drink: a hydration pack, a flask, or a small portable water bottle. Also, remember to locate possible water points if you know of any and if they exist along your route to refill if necessary.

Sun protection

The second danger in the middle of summer is the sun's rays, which are of course intense at this time of year, especially on long, hot, sunny days. And protecting yourself from the sun is essential for your skin and eyes. You shouldn't overlook the possibilities for sun protection: they range from sunscreen to caps, sunglasses, and even sportswear with adequate SPF protection (ideally a maximum of 50+). Be careful not to take the need for sun protection lightly. Beyond the risk of temporary sunburn (don't forget to protect the back of your neck and even potentially the ears in the event of prolonged exposure), the long-term risks are major for the skin in the case of repeated exposure to the sun without adequate protection, especially for fair skin.

The lightweight and breathable outfit

For running in the middle of summer, there's nothing better than ultra-lightweight, highly breathable, and quick-drying running or trail-running gear. Some technical textiles can even offer maximum sun protection (UPF 50+). If you opt for a tank top or sports bra, remember to protect the 'additional' areas exposed to the sun (shoulders, neck, back, stomach, etc.) with sunscreen. If you're going on a summer outing in the mountains, don't forget to bring a light jacket to cover up if necessary. Temperatures can change quickly with changes in altitude from the valley to the summit or pass, and fairly sudden changes in weather can take you from very hot to 'quite' cool. You need to be able to cover up quickly if necessary. Conversely, if the temperature continues to rise, you can opt for a very cool towel around the back of your neck, which will refresh you during the run (for a while).

Mosquito repellent

In some regions with a hot and humid climate and at certain times of the day, especially early or late in the day, mosquitoes can be particularly active. In this case, it may be wise to protect your legs and arms with a mosquito repellent solution applied just before setting out for a run. If you pass through tall grass during your run or trail run and your legs are not protected, also remember to check that you do not have ticks attached anywhere, especially on your legs/knees.

Anti-chafing creams

In summer, heat, humidity, and sweat can exacerbate chafing and skin irritation or redness, or even bleeding from repeated rubbing, even during relatively short rides (on long rides, the risk will be even greater). You can use an anti-chafing stick or cream as a preventative measure. The areas most susceptible to chafing are: between the thighs, the nipples (for men), under the arms, along the lines of sports bras, or at the waistband.

Now you're ready for all your summer outings. One last little tip for your summer outings: if possible, plan at least one outing in the summer very early before sunrise (checking the day before that the weather will be perfect). It's often a magical moment with incredible colors. It will sting a little when you wake up, but you'll be rewarded with a spectacle that no one tires of: a splendid sunrise facing the sea or on a mountain ridge. What better way to start a beautiful summer day!
